Youth Empowerment
At Miriam the kids run the show. Literally. Sure they get lots of guidance from our resident Community Director and Israeli shaliach, and from our Camp Committee, but we mean it when we say that we are all about youth leading youth. From the youngest campers all the way to our most senior staff, it’s truly unbelievable what a group of passionate and responsible young people can manifest when they are motivated.
Our programming is designed to cultivate age-appropriate leadership skills in our chanachimot (campers) as they progress through their summers at camp.
Miriam kids learn ownership and responsibility for their surroundings and for each other. They help keep their camp clean and safe by participating in avodah (work groups) every day; believe it or not, it’s not unusual to see ten-year-old boys clamoring to be part of the bathroom cleaning crew! They also learn trust and mentorship through a myriad of opportunities to participate in mixed age group activities like sports, arts and crafts and camp-wide games.
Democratic elections for camp-wide positions like gizbar (treasurer); special days like Bonim Bash and Yom Madatz; and regular opportunities for creative expression and hands-on learning are all examples of how we provide a summer of empowerment and personal transformation – not to mention a whole lot of fun! And, the fun continues beyond the summer with Ken events all year long.
